Founded in Indonesia in 1998 by Kahar Gunawan, Compass® was born from a vision to create something enduring. Not just another brand, but a symbol of thoughtful design and quality.
That vision began long before, in 1984, when Gunawan joined his father to establish a local shoe factory. While many produced for foreign labels, they chose a different path, to create their own legacy.
That choice - to go against the grain and champion local identity - became the founding philosophy of Compass®.

The Compass® logo draws inspiration from the gazelle - agile, enduring, and always in motion - embodying our spirit of progression and purpose. This sense of dynamism flows through our signature side trim: a mark of movement, not only of the body, but of ideas and creativity.
With every step forward, our heritage keeps us grounded. The Kawung motif, one of Indonesia’s oldest batik patterns, is featured across all Compass® designs. It symbolizes continuity and strength through humility; values deeply woven into our very foundation.
